Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe
If you find yourself looking for the very ultimate expression of luxurious open top motoring, there can be nothing more opulent and striking than the Rolls Royce Phantom Drophead Coupe.
I was asked by a fellow Swissvax Detailer to assist him with this car, and I certainly didn’t need to be asked twice. A very rare sight on our roads, the owner of this 250 mile car wanted it protected prior to a trip to Europe.
Arriving at the unit on a sunny Saturday morning, roof down, the car looked magnificent. We took a few moments to chat with the owner, delighted with his new purchase, and take in some of the many intricate details that make this car so special. The Jubilee Silver paintwork was flawless, just like every other modern Rolls Royce that their Goodwood facility produces.
The first job was to give the car a wash, removing a very light film of dust and dirt it had picked up on it’s travels so far. At this point, it really struck just how massive the car is. A Range Rover is a common sight on our roads, and probably one of the biggest you’ll see on a day to day basis. The Phantom can’t quite match it for width, giving away around 6 inches at the final count, but the Rolls is over 2 feet longer than the giant 4×4!
With the wash stage completed, the car was carefully dried and moved into the unit. Expecting it to feel heavy, manoeuvring the car was amazingly easy, the controls light and accurate. If further evidence of the car’s vastness were needed, for a bit of fun I parked my BMW in front of it to take a photograph. No trick of perspective, no messing about in photoshop, the Phantom genuinely towered over my 3-series.A further inspection of the paint under harsh halogen lighting confirmed it to be near perfect. In search of the ultimate finish, and to best prepare for the wax application, we used a Swissvax Cleaner Fluid containing a very light abrasive, worked into the paint by machine. It is not strong enough to be used to remove paint, but instead used to burnish the surface to a very high gloss. That done, regular Swissvax Cleaner Fluid was used to clean and prepare the wheels, together with the bare brushed aluminium trim that had some very slight tarnishing and water spots.
With every surface as clean as possible, we applied the first of two layer of wax, in this case Swissvax Divine. Unmatched in it’s lustrous glossy finish, and durability that means effortless upkeep, it was the obvious choice for this car. The wheels were treated with Autobahn wax, the tyres dressed and glass cleaned. Inside, a quick vacuum followed by suitable protectors being applied to the fabric and leather areas. Under the bonnet, a dressing was applied to provide the rich sheen desirable, whilst helping to keep rubber and plastic components in their best condition.
The car finished, we took the opportunity to indulge in a shared passion for photography, irresistible considering the rare subject in front of us. I must credit my colleague Bryan with a lot of these, who is considerably more talented with a camera than me.
Look out soon for a write up containing the owners next purchase…..a Lamborghini Murcielago SV to be collected straight from the factory in Sant’ Agata, Italy.
Testimonials
“I would definitely recommend anyone to use Shine On regardless of marque, Paul is a genuinely nice bloke who has the rare attributes of actually loving his job and doing it to the best of his ability (bordering on OCD). I personally plan to use this service at least every 8months to keep the cars looking at their best.
And to top it all off…..even my wife commented on how and I quote ‘amazing’ it looked, that testimony alone is worth its weight in gold!
Andy (M3 and Battle Bus!)”
